Land That Time Forgot

As I neared the bottom of a steep muddy trail leading to the base of Wailua Falls a thunderous roar of the waterfall filled the air. The gigantic waterfall forces water down a 115 feet drop creating a thick misty breeze circulating through on the base of the falls. It's hard to believe that Hawaiian men would jump from the top of the falls to prove their manhood. If you look closely at this picture you will see the man standing at the top of the fall just to the left between the trees. I normally don't include people in my photography but I thought this would give some perspective on the size of Wailua Falls.

Dusk at Kūkaemoku

The setting sun radiates off of Iao Needle (Kūkaemoku), a famous Hawaiian landmark. I’ve been to this exact spot many times to photograph Iao Needle, on this day the water levels were higher than normal. The water was high enough to completely blanket the large bolder in the foreground. As the sun began to fade behind the West Maui Mountains I was able to slow the shutter speed of my camera and capture an image with smooth flowing water with the majestic Iao Needle in the background.

The Three Bears

As the morning light peaked over the horizon, I was well on my way maneuvering through the twist and turns of the 60 mile stretch of the Hana Highway. I was heading to the remote town of Hana, on the far east side of Maui. The drive along the Hana Highway is breathtakingly beautiful, but I often forget to slow down and enjoy the journey. I'm always in a rush to get to where I'm going and I don't take enough time to slow down and appreciate the beautiful place that I live. On this trip I took some time to explore and photograph the amazing journey. Here is a brisk morning photo of Upper Waikani Falls, affectionately nicknamed Three Bears Falls, found right along the road to Hana.

Autumn at Multnomah Falls

On this early fall morning in the Colombia River Gorge a dense layer fog of filled the air. As I set my camera up I was very worried that the fog was too thick to get a good shot of Multnomah Falls. After a few minutes the fog cleared just long enough to expose the amazing fall colors around the towering waterfall. This turned out to be one of my favorite pictures from my trip to the Pacific Northwest.

Immersed in Nature

Ho'opi'i Falls is an amazing location on the island of Kauai. A sense of calmness and relaxation filled me as I photographed this waterfall. I spent a few hours just capturing different perspectives of the flowing water. This was my favorite shot of the day. I love how the flowers fill the foreground as the crisp waters of Kapaa Stream cascade over the rocks.

A Night in Wailua

On the island of Kauai just a short drive up the road from Lihue, you'll find Wailua Falls. The picturesque, 173 foot waterfall is a favorite location for photographers. I've been to Wailua Falls a few times before and I wanted to take a unique picture of the falls that no one else had done. On this clear night with a full moon shining down, all of the elements lined up to do a long exposure shot. I waited till the moon was overhead, clearing the valley walls and illuminating the falling water. A 30 minute long exposure captures the trails of the stars moving through the sky.

Serenity

I found this beautiful location while exploring East Maui. I hiked here in the morning as the rising sun broke through the valley. The scene was so surreal that I had to capture the moment with my camera.
